Chris Schaub is a member of our vestry and a life-long Episcopalian. Although this is her first term on vestry, she has been involved in church for most of her life. Her parents, who were raised Baptist, came to the Episcopal Church as adults when they became members of Grace Episcopal in Port Huron, MI.
Chris and her husband, Paul, were married here at St. John’s in 1971. Their children were part of the Sunday School programs and their daughter, Amy, was also married here. However, it’s the ministries between these life events that really keep Chris connected. Chris says, “From childhood through today, being involved in a music ministry has really kept me in church.” True to our Anglican musical heritage, Chris has been singing in church choirs since the fourth grade and continues today to sing with the choir of St. John’s. “It’s a way for me to better understand our traditions and it provides great fellowship!”
As a vestry member, Chris hopes to find ways to connect the strengths of our ministries at St. John’s with the strengths of other institutions and people in our neighborhood. She’s excited to help build relationships that will continue to grow the positive influence we have in Saginaw as well as our with membership.
Once you talk to Chris about the family cottage on Thumb Lake, it’s easy to understand why she values the traditions of the church so much. Chris’ grandfather purchased the land from a Baptist summer camp in the 1930’s. Since then, it has functioned as a gathering place for sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren! This family stronghold has made a place for great relationships and great memories yielding itself as one of Chris’ “greatest joys.”
How lucky are we to be creating that atmosphere with Chris at St. John’s as well?
